Recent years have seen the return of embroidery, with a feminist vengeance. While that may or may not be Berny Tan‘s ultimate goal, I think we can all agree that her artistic practice have pushed the art of needlepoint away from the typical representational aesthetic, towards the abstract. Deconstructing the idea of embroidery, the anxious stitcher stresses on the importance of process by exposing the so-called dark side of embroidery, the back – and apparently, it’s just as interesting.
